Couscous and Why It Rocks

Today's special post focuses on the wonder food that is couscous.

Besides its rocking name, couscous is one of the simplest foods you can possibly make. It's a great staple food and is common in Morocco, Libya, and many other countries.

However, perhaps some of my newbie chefs are intimidated by couscous' name. Like quinoa (which, by the way, is also delicious and super easy to cook), beginner cooks might be hesitant to make something they can barely spell, let alone pronounce.

But have no fear! Today's post will explain couscous and calm any concerns about making it. Read on!

Couscous Fast Facts

  • What is couscous? Great question! Couscous is essentially really, really tiny pieces of wheat. This wheat (semolina) is the kind used to make pasta.
  • What does couscous taste like? This is one of the best things about couscous: it's flavorless! It might look scary or weird, but it doesn't taste like anything. That means it's perfect to serve with dishes that use sauces.
  • How do you make couscous? Couscous is super easy to make. Seriously, all you have to do is boil water. Once that's done, you add the couscous and remove it from the heat. Then you let the couscous sit for five minutes, and you're done! All couscous does is absorb the warm water, so there is literally no cooking involved.
Simple enough, right? Perhaps you're still not convinced. Here's a list of 5 reasons to eat couscous.

Why should I eat couscous?

  1. It's healthy.
  2. It's simple to make.
  3. It's fast.
  4. It requires no cooking whatsoever.
  5. It's flavorless, so you can add it to whatever meal you'd like as a side. You can also add whatever you want to the couscous itself to liven it up.

Tip: Add garlic salt and red pepper flakes to spice up your couscous!

So there you have it! Are you ready to try couscous now, or do you have more questions? Post a response below!

As always, enjoy!

KEEP ON COOKING!

  1. For some reason, I didn't discover this dish until literally about two years ago! I have a box of couscous mix from Trader Joe's in my cupboard. Perhaps I should make it sometime. Definitely love the foods you've selected, Kelsey!

    1. Yes, me too! I wouldn't have even known about it--yet alone been brave enough to try it--if my dad hadn't made it for my sister and I a few years back. And thank you! :)
