5 Tips for Healthy Eating When Traveling

Me in front of Stonehenge!
Traveling is one of my favorite things to do. All the new people, experiences, and--most important--food always make trips rewarding opportunities for me to grow and learn.

That being said, I constantly struggle with healthy eating when I travel. Depending on where you go, it can be next to impossible to find something as simple as a green salad.

Ever had a similar issue? Read on for some tips that I've learned through hard-earned experience about healthy eating while on vacation.
I recently returned from a week-long trip to London and the surrounding area. It was an amazing vacation, but fresh fruit and similar foods were hard to come by.

Here are some pointers I picked up along the way:
Fruit smoothies are the best.
  1. Constantly be on the lookout for entrees that include fruit and/or vegetables. The main thing I found in London was fruit smoothies. Make sure they include real fruit, and not just ice cream. You can also order items that have vegetables as sides.
  2. Just because there are desserts, doesn't mean you should eat them. This seems like a no-brainer, but for my trip I went with a tour group, which meant pre-planned meals. It's pretty difficult to turn down ice cream when it's served to you, but for your body's sake, you should only eat a few bites.
  3. Eat like the locals, but make sure your meals are well-rounded. This summarizes the previous two points, but it's still important. When you travel, it's great to experience local culture, and a great way to do that is by eating the food. However, if all the food groups aren't usually present in local meals, go out of your way to find them in some other form.
  4. Drink plenty of water. Not only will you be walking around a lot, but your body can become stressed from multiple plane rides and new environments (not to mention jet lag!). By drinking lots of water, you'll ensure that you're as well-adjusted and ready to go for your trip as possible. Water also helps tide you over between meals, so you'll be less tempted to snack on unhealthy foods.
  5. When all else fails, walk a lot and don't finish everything on your plate. This applies to anytime you eat out. There's nothing better than walking off a restaurant meal, and when you're traveling, you've already been moving around all day. Additionally, by not eating everything you're served, you won't overload on fatty oils and butter, which most restaurant meals are cooked with.
